What is a Historic North Knoxville Neighborhood?

Today, many of these historic homes still remain and offer a glimpse back into our past.  The North Knoxville neighborhood is bordered by South Central Street to the west, West End Avenue to the east, Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue to the south, and Oak Ridge Turnpike to the north. The North Knoxville neighborhood is also bordered by the North Holston River to the west, the University of Tennessee to the south and east, and East Town to the north.

Where is the Historic North Knoxville Neighborhood?

The North Knoxville neighborhood is located in the southeastern part of the city. It is bordered by the North Holston River to the west, Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue to the east, West End Avenue to the south, and Oak Ridge Turnpike to the north. The North Knoxville neighborhood is also bordered by the University of Tennessee to the south and east, and East Town to the north.  The North Knoxville neighborhood is easily accessible from Interstate 40, Interstate 75, and Interstate 69. It is also easily accessible from Clinchfield railroad tracks and the Harriman railroad tracks. The Clinchfield and the Harriman railroad tracks are the two major tracks in East Tennessee that are used to ship and export coal to markets throughout the eastern half of the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The First European Settlement in Knoxville

The first European settlers to call the area around what is now Knoxville home arrived in 1788. The earliest settlers were a group of Virginians led by Daniel Drake, who chose the site of what is now the city of Knoxville for its strategic location along the Holston River. Drake and his men settled the area around the fall of 1788, clearing the land and building a small settlement that they called “New Town.” The area around “New Town” was named “Knox Bluff” by Drake, in honor of his patron, John Knox, the Scottish minister who had promoted the settlement of America.

The Founding of the University of Tennessee

The first students, who were all veterans of the Revolutionary War, began to attend the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 1793. The construction of the first building on the university campus began in 1819, and the university opened its doors to students in 1825. As the city that would become known as “The Hub of the South” grew, so did the university. The university’s reputation grew, and students and faculty flocked to Knoxville to study and complete their education.

Park and Recreation Areas

The North Knoxville neighborhood is home to a number of parks and recreation areas. These include the Kilbourn City Park, Sycamore Park, the University of Tennessee Arboretum, and the scenic Blount Lake. The Blount Lake Recreation Area is a 55-acre man-made lake in the city of Knoxville. The lake is named for William Blount, a Revolutionary War general who served as the governor of Tennessee from 1796 to 1801. Blount Lake also provides a great place for swimming, fishing, boating, and enjoying the great outdoors.
